Graduation Part II

As I drove Jordan to the after-party, after his high school graduation ceremony, it was dark out on a clear night. The moon was full and extra large. It was the summer solstice, so this full moon was the Strawberry moon. It felt like a special evening with such a large full moon shining down on us and these grads for their celebration.

Jordan had just had his ceremony, and it was a great occasion – even if it was a lot of clapping – for all the graduates as they walked across the stage. It was special to see him, his friends and many kids he had gone to pre-school or kindergarten with, all reach this milestone.

Owen, the younger one, also has a graduation this week. He completes grade 7 at the school where he has been since Kindergarten. On to the high school next year. Jordan went to the same elementary, so we were counting the years and realized we are wrapping up 14 consecutive years between the two of them, at this school. And then 10 consecutive years of the high school. One moves on and the other begins!

Tomorrow is the grade 7 celebration ceremony and party at the park in the afternoon for the kids. He is feeling ready to move on from all the little kids at the elementary school. He is feeling quite grown up and ready for his next stage at the high school.

It is true what everyone says, it feels like you blink and years go by. With the boys being close to 5 years apart, I do feel fortunate that it allows me the gift of perspective. I can appreciate the stages that Owen goes through and know that I want to soak it all in and embrace it.

By no means does it mean I feel like I’ve done my job with Jordan and he is now ‘leaving the nest.’ I think we are far from that day. But his childhood is over. That’s the part I get emotional about. I’ve always adored him (and both of them) as little kids. I am happy he’ll be around for some time still while he figures out his path. And soon enough, we will be at that day with Owen.

Sending Love,

Devon.
