Creative Director: Sufficiency
I Create: Creative Director of My Life.
Sufficiency. For context, I heard this word while listening to Kate Northrup speak. Her work is around healing your nervous system – specifically around money, but also increasing one’s capacity to allow blessings in and function and manage the stressors in life. She talks about how sufficiency is so important in that if we feel we can do something to improve our life, improve our situation, we are more empowered, which then leads to us doing more and being more capable.
She speaks highly of and recommends highly, a book called The Soul of Money, by Lynne Twist.
I didn’t know anything about the book or author, but did get my hands on a copy out of curiosity with how highly Kate Northrup recommends it. I love reading all things money psychology, and didn’t expect that this book, was written by and in the perspective of someone who made her career fundraising. Helping people throughout the world in the poorest parts of the planet, but also working with and accepting donations from some of the most resource rich people. She interacted with both ends of the spectrum of ‘resources.’
So many lessons in this book, and first hand stories of interactions and experiences. In her work, sufficiency, is what can give people hope where they didn’t see hope before. Sometimes raising resources like food and just handing that out created more problems in some situations. Dependencies, which then lead to different issues. She talks about working with communities. Creating partnerships, or cooperatives.
Sufficiency can be stated as: knowing that within yourself, you can draw on your own resources. Whether that is skill, talent, charisma, or networking to build co-operative partnerships. Knowing that within yourself, you can be sufficient. That if there is a skill you are lacking, you can figure it out and problem solve to find a way. Looking at a problem and asking, how. How can I overcome this? How can this work? How can I find a solution?
A important lesson for anyone. And a very helpful perspective when considering creating the life of your dreams. Asking yourself how. Considering the ways in which you can help yourself and what you have to offer.
Until next week,
Devon
