Creative Director: Willpower

I create: Creative Director of my Life.

Willpower definition:

  • The ability to control oneself and determine one’s actions.
  • Firmness of will.

Or put another way: Willpower is the ability to resist short-term temptations in order to meet long-term goals. In order to creatively direct our life, we want to determine our actions. Then we can make our way on our map to the destination that we choose and not be tossed, like a leaf in the wind, through our own life experience. This is why willpower is vital.

So where do we start? Well, we know our goal, our destination or our vision board wishes. These are the non-negotiable things we want. Once we are firm on what we want, and we keep the end vision in mind, then we won’t likely be swayed for short term temptations. But it is worthy of recognizing when they come up. Recognizing something that may steer you to a short cut. Or something that could count as ‘settling’ for a lesser success, rather than putting in the harder work for the ultimate victory that you are working towards.

I think it’s helpful to think of these scenarios and ask yourself, would I be happy if I didn’t see my goal through all the way? Would I be disappointed in myself if I accepted a lesser win? If I am working on this for years and there is no evidence yet of anything more than very minor improvement, will that discourage me enough to the point of not continuing?

Or… will I be able to recognize that we don’t do all this work, we don’t get this far to only go this far? We don’t have a desire and a goal within us to only go half way, do we? There is a purpose behind my goal, so do I recognize that this is my path and I can’t stop at any time simply because of discouragement?

We can do hard things. We see evidence of it all around us. So who are you, not to be great? If we want to create our life, we don’t want to settle. We can’t make it to the goal with short-cuts. We can’t make it to the goal with procrastination. We can’t make it to the goal with putting the work aside and doing the more enjoyable things. Doing a little bit every day adds up to a lot. Doing a little bit every day takes time, but you’re a lot farther ahead than if you had done nothing.

I have stacks of paintings now, because I committed to and stayed with a plan for my art work. Looking back on the last year, I am farther now, then what the prospects appeared to be at that time. It’s worth it. And you’re the only one that can truly hold yourself accountable. With your willpower.

Until next week,

Devon
