Homebody

It’s dark out as I open the door in the morning to let the dog outside so he can pee while I get my shoes and doggy treat pouch ready for our walk. I can feel the cooler morning air and some parts of me know I could easily stay in cozy socks and sweatpants rather than venture outside. In the past, I would let that part of me make the call and make up reasons why it’s ok if I don’t go.

I know myself better now, and recognize that it’s easy for one missed day to turn into two and then three per week. It’s always this time of year too, that if given the choice, I’d stay in. I love being at home, inside and cozy, and am definitely a homebody. I am completely ok spending most of my time at home.

We’ve had our dog, Calvin, for 14 months now, and I am so glad I have him to get us both outside. I do feel obligated, but in a positive way, like I want him to get fresh air, and the chance to stretch his legs at the start of each day. He’s just so happy to have our routine each morning. Rain or shine – or snow – it’s given me the chance also to breathe the fresh air and see our little corner of the world wake up and start each new day. And even as much as I love staying in, I am very much a morning person so now I don’t want to miss out on this experience each morning. I’ve even found that being out earlier than most people and walking the very quiet roads, gives me a whole different perspective on life, nature and soaking it all in – the flow of life. An appreciation as well as perspective.

With our walk happening first thing in the morning, I know I won’t allow other things to get in the way, or make excuses. We get outside and it’s checked off the list! So then my homebody tendencies can take over the rest of the day but at least we’ve both had our walk. If the weather turns bad, we are then free to cozy up! People have asked me, ‘how do you make the time to walk or exercise?’ And for me, the answer is – first thing in the morning!

Sending Love,

Devon
