Creative Director: Invest
I Create: Creative Director of My Life.
What is the best investment you can make? The best investment with the highest ROI – Return on Investment?
Yourself.
Two specific podcasts that I have been listening to lately have this advice. Nothing will outperform investing in yourself.
One podcast brought this up in discussion of what is the ‘best thing’ to invest in. When you are trying to make good money, what’s a good recommendation? The advice being, don’t try to follow fads and trends, especially if you don’t really know much about that trend. Instead to invest in what you know, and what do you know better than yourself, which means to invest in building your skills and growth. This was a Lewis Howes podcast episode with David Ghiyam.
Kate Northrop was discussing how someone could invest in assets that align with your values. Which again, brought up investing in yourself being the ROI that can guarantee that. If you can invest in yourself to level up your skills to grow your income and or assets, then you get that freedom to align your time or other resources available with your values.
Last year I did invest more heavily in myself with the opening of my Webshop. I did a short learning on SEO: Search Engine Optimization. And dove into some learning about social media. I found and took advantage of a lot of resources.
With listening to these podcasts lately, it did ‘validate’ again and gave me that reminder that this is a good thing. I tend to look at expenses on myself as not necessary, or spending that’s unjustified. I have a hard time with ‘wasting’ money. But when I wanted to do a $27 learning lately, I realized it is for my benefit, and it advances my skills and knowledge. If there is a book that I want, and know it will help me, and that it will be utilized again and again, that investment is worth it (and borrowing from the Library first to make sure it’s a good fit, is a hot tip). A membership, which allows me to be part of a Children’s book writing and illustrating community and offers entry into some juried writing competitions = worthwhile investment.
These are examples of things that will help me grow skills and learn things specific to my bigger goals. They can all play a part in reaching those bigger goals, on my map to reach my destination. To create a life I love. Which means these things will have the highest return. These examples above and anything that will grow my consciousness and expand my awareness, are what aligns with my values. That’s what I’m investing in.
Until next week,
Devon
